IHS estimates production of the newly developed diesel engine at Higashi-Chita plant will reach 13,000 units by the end of 2015.

Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) has initiated production of the new 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre in-line turbo diesel engine at its Higashi-Chita plant, according to a report by Response JP. The newly developed engine is currently available in the new Hilux pickup truck launched in Thailand in May 2015 and in the redesigned Land Cruiser Prado launched in Japan earlier this month.

Significance: Toyota Motor commissioned TICO to manufacture its GD engines and turbochargers, production of which started in February 2015 at the company's Hekinan plant in Aichi Prefecture. The new 1GD-FTV 2.8L uses thermo swing wall insulation technology (TSWIN) and a urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to offer more torque, greater efficiency, and lower emissions. The development of this next-generation engine is a part of Toyota Motor's initiative to advance its overall powertrain system capabilities. According to IHS estimates, production of the newly developed diesel engine at Higashi-Chita plant will reach 13,000 units by the end of 2015.
