Hyundai Motor Group, including Kia Motors Corp, has announced plans to release an autonomous vehicle using its own operating system (OS), according to a Maeil Business report. The initiative is to be called "Connected Car Operating System (ccOS)" and the group is aiming to install its self-developed piloting software in new car models from 2020. Earlier this year, Hyundai Group announced in June that it was investing in a unit dedicated to developing vehicle OS at its research centre at Namyang, Gyeonggi province, South Korea. The team is also working on a prototype ahead of commercialization.
Significance: Hyundai has been in talks with a number of companies including Google and Cisco Systems on connected car technologies. Hyundai-Kia plans to use open source software including an open In-vehicle Infotainment (IVI) platform of the GENIVI Alliance, a non-profit industry alliance committed to driving the broad adoption of open-source, IVI software and providing open technology for connected cars. Hyundai's ccOS would incorporate this technology, according to the company.
