Choice of transmission design is expected to move towards the vehicle manufacturer only offering automatic transmissions

More severe global emission regulations lead vehicle manufacturers to look at the entire vehicle to optimize fuel consumption. One area of interest to vehicle manufacturers is replacing manual transmissions with automatic transmissions, allowing for a higher number of gear ratios. This enables smaller, more efficient engines to operate much nearer to their optimal acceleration, speed and torque. Two decades ago, a standard manual gearbox had only three to five speeds, whereas, presently the industry offers automatic transmissions up to 10 speeds.
