Once heralded as a promising alternative to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), hydrogen-powered mobility now finds itself at a crossroads, grappling with infrastructural bottlenecks, economic impracticalities, and a highly niche market, especially in the light vehicle segment. Stellantis’ recent decision to shelve its hydrogen fuel cell program, coupled with the recent liquidation of HYVIA, a joint venture between Renault and US hydrogen firm Plug Power, underscores the mounting headwinds facing fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) industry.
