GM adjusts EV strategy, halting battery production for six months and reducing Detroit plant shifts

General Motors announced it will reduce electric vehicle and battery production, resulting in the loss of 1,200 jobs at its EV plant in Detroit and 550 jobs at an Ohio battery plant in response to decreased demand for battery cars. Battery cell production will be halted at GM's joint-venture battery facilities in Tennessee and Ohio for approximately six months starting January 2026, with about 1,550 workers at these plants being temporarily laid off. Additionally, 550 workers at the Ohio plant, operated with LG Energy Solution, will face indefinite layoffs.
