California DMV adopts comprehensive autonomous vehicle rules for light- and heavy-duty fleets
New regulations tighten safety oversight, expand data reporting, authorize emergency geofencing, and set phased permitting and mileage thresholds for testing and deployment statewide
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced the adoption of new autonomous vehicle regulations covering both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, following an extensive public comment and review process. Described as the most comprehensive autonomous vehicle regulations in the nation, these rules update safety requirements, oversight and enforcement, and allow autonomous vehicle manufacturers to apply for permits to test and deploy heavy-duty autonomous vehicle technology on California roadways.
