For much of the past decade, the automotive industry’s climate strategy followed a comforting logic. Electrify the drivetrain, clean up factory operations and allow tailpipe emissions to fall away. The arithmetic looked reassuring. The remaining emissions — those buried in steel mills, chemical plants, logistics networks and mines — were acknowledged but treated as a distant second-order problem.
