High-recline “zero-gravity” seats face new safety test requirements in mainland China

Policy & Regulation

New frontal crash tests and stricter seat-angle limits threaten the future of high-recline seats in premium new-energy vehicles, forcing automakers to turn comfort features into engineered safety systems.

High-reclining seats — also known as zero-gravity seats — have become immensely popular in mainland China over the last few years. Several local automakers, especially manufacturers of new-energy vehicles (NEVs), are equipping their new vehicles with such seats, which can be reclined up to 140–160 degrees to deliver a more comfortable ride experience for occupants.
