For decades, the automotive battery was regarded as a technical challenge and a cost to be managed. Engineers obsessed over chemistry, energy density and cell price, while procurement teams scrambled for lithium and cobalt. Once a battery was installed in a car, it faded into the background, its fate sealed until the vehicle reached the scrapyard.
