Anthro Energy, an emerging battery technology company founded at Stanford University, broke ground on its electrolyte production plant in Louisville, Kentucky. The facility is expected to produce about 12,000 metric tons of advanced polymer electrolyte per annum by late 2027.

The company said the plant is expected to be the first US-owned and -operated advanced electrolyte manufacturing facility and its first commercial-scale manufacturing site. Output from the facility would be enough to support up to 25 GWh of lithium-ion battery production for uses including defense, consumer electronics, mobility, robotics and energy storage systems.

Anthro Energy expects to begin occupying and commissioning the facility after construction is completed. The project is expected to create about 110 full-time manufacturing and technical jobs and support nearly 390 construction jobs during the buildout.

The groundbreaking follows US Department of Energy (DOE) authorization for Anthro Energy to move the project into full execution. The company previously received a $24.9 million award under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and $18.4 million in investment tax credits through the Inflation Reduction Act's 48C Advanced Energy Project Tax Credit Program.

Anthro's Anthro Proteus® platform replaces conventional liquid electrolytes with phase-change polymer electrolytes designed to improve battery safety, increase energy density and allow greater design flexibility while remaining compatible with current lithium-ion manufacturing infrastructure. The company said the Louisville plant will use Foreign Entity of Concern-free inputs from day one.

The facility is expected to work with local workforce and education groups including Kentucky FAME, Jefferson Community and Technical College, KentuckianaWorks, Kentucky Valor and Fort Campbell as it hires and trains workers.
